2020 MLCC Season
2020 MLCC Season Summary
The Mountain Lions Cycling Club (MLCC) is a team within the Maryland Interscholastic Cycling League, participating in the National Interscholastic Cycling Association. MLCC builds youth character and fitness through off-road cycling adventures. And we have fun. Lots and lots of fun! MLCC provides a safe and high-quality mountain biking program for students in grades 6 to 12. The MLCC program develops student athletes with a view towards their participation in competitive mountain bike racing.
In 2020, MLCC remained the first and only Howard County youth mountain biking team participating in the Maryland Interscholastic Cycling League (MICL). Our student athletes learned basic riding skills and safety, environmental responsibility, love for the outdoors, and the thrill of racing. Furthermore, MLCC riders learned to overcome physical challenges on the trail, which builds personal confidence in all areas of their lives, for the rest of their lives.
This season was truly unique as MLCC coped with the challenge of leading outdoor cycling trail rides and mountain bike skill building activities during the COVID-19 pandemic. During the summer of 2020, many youth sport programs ground to a halt. However, MLCC found ways to navigate the challenges in order to continue, for a third consecutive year, providing a safe and exciting mountain biking season.
MLCC hosted one field practice each week dedicated to building riders’ bike handling skills, mechanical working knowledge necessary to make on-trail repairs, and to develop competitive racing fitness. We also hosted a weekly trail ride at various locations throughout the Patapsco State Park where we put those skill to use. Out of a concern for rider and staff safety, and respect for local and state guidelines, the MICL unfortunately did not host any of the planned five races for the 2020 season. Instead, MLCC hosted travel rides to past and future race locations, and to new trails systems. Our goal was to expose riders to a variety of trails and conditions in order to prepare them for a fantastic 2021 race season. Despite the challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, we supported our largest roster yet with 60 riders and 23 coaches.
The Mountain Lions Cycling Club builds youth character, fitness, community responsibility, and love for outdoor adventures. Regardless of ability, social or economic status, or fitness level, MLCC is committed to providing a positive experience for all student-athletes in accordance with five core principles:
MLCC transforms boys and girls into leading men and women with skills and experiences that will give them the keys to success for a lifetime.
