2019 MLCC Season Summary
The Mountain Lions Cycling Club (MLCC) is a team within the Maryland Interscholastic Cycling League, which is a project of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association. MLCC builds youth character and fitness through off-road cycling adventures. And we have fun. Lots and lot of fun! MLCC provides a fun, safe and high-quality mountain biking program for students in grades 6 to 12. The MLCC program develops student athletes with a view towards their participation in competitive mountain bike racing.
MLCC was the first and is still the only Howard County youth mountain biking team participating in the Maryland Interscholastic Cycling League. Our student athletes learned basic riding skills and safety, environmental responsibility, love for the outdoors, and the thrill of racing. Furthermore, MLCC riders learned to overcome physical challenges on the trail which builds personal confidence in all areas of their lives, for the rest of their lives.
In 2019, the MLCC has hosted three practices each week designed to build bike handling skills, mechanical working knowledge necessary to make on-trail repairs, and to develop competitive racing fitness. Riders participated in four races across the state against more than 20 teams. We supported 49 student athletes, including 3 athletes from the Maryland School for the Deaf, with 21 trained and licensed coaching staff members. Notable 2019 season success stories include:

- Participation of deaf and hard of hearing student athletes who have never competed on bikes; only team in Maryland to successfully integrate deaf and hard of hearing athletes.
- Student athlete participation and growth of almost 70% from 2018 to 2019 season
- Outstanding safety record with no serious injuries for two consecutive years.
- Although the MICL opted not to record points for middle school teams, the MICL high school team placed third overall against more than 20 teams across the Maryland league.
- Numerous student athletes placed within their division during each of the four 2019 season races.
